Ever since Anna Nicole Smith died suddenly and tragically after passing out at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino of Feb. 8, the details of the former Playboy Playmate's last few months have revealed many startling facts. While the biggest story making headlines concerns the paternity of Smith's infant daughter, Dannielynn, photos of Anna Nicole Smith in bed with the Immigration Minister for the Bahamas has sparked outrage in the small island nation. After the photos of Shane Gibson and Anna Nicole Smith were made public, and after a large public outcry from citizens in the Bahamas, the Immigration Minister has been forced to resign his post.
Shane Gibson announced his resignation late Sunday night via state television and radio. While Gibson did step down from his post amid his involvement with Anna Nicole Smith, the Bahamian official denied any wrongdoing in the case and said there was no romantic link between he and Anna Nicole.
Reuters quoted Shane Gibson, who said, "My entire family have suffered enough. For far too long they have had to listen to one lie after another. It can only get worse."
Gibson first entered into the unwelcome spotlight when a Bahamas newspaper printed front-page photographs that showed he and Anna Nicole Smith embracing each other on a bed. After the photos were revealed, reports began to indicate that Gibson had fast-tracked Anna Nicole Smith for residence in the Bahamas. Critics have gone so far as to say Shane Gibson granted residency to Anna Nicole Smith based solely on their relationship even though Smith did not meet the criteria for becoming a resident of the Caribbean nation. The BBC quoted Gibson's resignation speech, where he said, "I want to apologize to all persons who may in any way have been offended by anything that I have said, done or perceived to have said or done."
According to the local newspaper The Bahama Journal, Shane Gibson's mother has been looking after Dannielynn Stern, the daughter of Anna Nicole Smith, when Smith died in Florida. While all of these events have led to the resignation of Shane Gibson, and a potentially fatal blow to the governing Progressive Liberal Party, Prime Minister Perry Christie said he accepted Gibson's resignation. The Prime Minister was quoted by the Washington Post as saying on TV that, "However sad Shane's decision to resign may be, I also believe, as does he, that it is the correct course of action for him to take in all of the circumstances."
While party politics in the Bahamas have been rocked with this allegation, the death of Anna Nicole Smith has led to a boon for tourism to the small island chain nation just south of Florida. The gated waterfront mansion where Anna Nicole Smith had been living, the estate known as "Horizons", has become a popular sightseeing location on New Providence Island. Tour bus operators, cab drivers and even scooter rentals have seen an incredible rise in the number of tourists who want to see Anna Nicole Smith's Bahamian home. One cab driver, Vaughn Nairn, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying, "This weekend I've been out here at least 10 times. ... They're coming to me saying they want to see Anna Nicole's house. I'm loving it, this is good business."
Though it may be good for business the battle over the body of Anna Nicole Smith, as well as her daughter and her estate, has been raging on, taking its toll on all involved. While the paternity case involving Dannielynn has been raging on for months, even before Anna Nicole Smith died, it seems to be headed nowhere fast. While the paternity case initially involved Smith's lover, Howard K. Stern, who is listed as the father on Dannielynn's birth certificate, and Smith's former boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, things quickly heated up as Prince Frederic von Anhalt, husband of Zsa Zsa Gabor, claimed he may be the father and filed court papers to request a DNA test. As well, former Anna Nicole Smith bodyguard Alexander Denk claimed he, too, may be the baby.
As the paternity case drags on, another court hearing is set for Tuesday to determine where Anna Nicole Smith will be buried. Stern, the executor of Smith's will, says he wants to bury her next to her son, Daniel, in the Bahamas, while Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, wants to bury her in Texas. TMZ is now reporting that Larry Birkhead will testify in the Anna Nicole burial saga in order to offer his opinion. At the same time, Howard K. Stern has been asked to return from the Bahamas in order to testify in front of the judge. That hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
